Vaikaradhoo

Vaikaradhoo lies in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, within the Thiladhunmathi region of the northern Maldives, some 285 km from Malé. According to the 2022 census, 776 people live there, making it a modest but established community reached today by domestic flight or local ferry.

The island has a long history of settlement, with archaeological traces including an old mosque and cemetery complex near Virares office, thought to date from between the 15th and 17th centuries, and the ruined hawaitta mounds known as Jaadi Valhulithan on its western edge. Vaikaradhoo was among the islands badly affected by the great storm of 1821 that struck the northern atolls, and its history reflects the wider pattern of settlement and hardship common to Thiladhunmathi's older villages.

Agriculture has long shaped daily life here. Residents grow short-term crops such as watermelon, scotch bonnet pepper, green chilli, papaya, taro and pumpkin, and the island was once the country's leading producer of finger millet, a crop that helped see the community through the hardships of the Second World War and was traded with people from Raa Atoll. Farming remains both a livelihood and something of a local pastime, with plots allocated to households by the island administration.

Vaikaradhoo is best known simply as a local community, one where, by its own account, people are closely acquainted through shared social life and communal celebrations. It also developed a distinctive strand of civic activity in the 2000s, running some of the earliest island-based online newspapers in the Maldives, including a site linked to reporting during the period of political change in 2008.
