Thimarafushi

Thimarafushi lies in Thaa Atoll, some 192 km south of Male'. According to the 2022 census, the island has a resident population of 1,229.

Fishing has traditionally been the main source of income for islanders, alongside contract work, shipping and small business activity, giving the local economy a mix of primary, secondary and tertiary sectors rather than reliance on a single trade.

Thimarafushi has a reputation within the Maldives for its football and futsal, with local sportsmen noted for their achievements in these games. The island also has facilities for other sports, including volleyball and badminton courts.

In September 2013, an airport was built on reclaimed land on the island, which also created a new neighbourhood and expanded the island's overall area. This gives Thimarafushi its own domestic flight connection, distinguishing it from many other islands in Thaa Atoll that rely solely on sea transport.
