Naifaru

Naifaru is the capital of Lhaviyani Atoll, some 150 km north of Malé, and with a resident population of 4,814 at the 2022 census it ranks among the more populous islands in the Maldives outside the main urban centres. It has a long inhabited history, with local historical evidence, including tombstones, mosque endowment records and accounts of banished political prisoners, suggesting continuous settlement since at least the late 16th century.

The island's economy has traditionally rested on fishing, a livelihood that shaped the wider atoll: the country's first tuna canning factory was built on the nearby island of Felivaru because of Naifaru's strong catch. Fishing remains significant today, though increasing numbers of younger residents now work on resort islands instead. Naifaru also functions as a retail hub for the atoll, with well over a hundred shops covering everything from hardware and building materials to clothing and electronics.

As the atoll capital, Naifaru holds the main administrative and medical facilities for Lhaviyani, including the atoll's only hospital, which draws patients from surrounding islands. It is also an established centre of education, home to Madhrasathul Ifthithaah, one of the country's oldest schools, founded in 1933, and to some of the Maldives' earliest preschools.

Compared with the smaller, quieter islands elsewhere in the atoll, Naifaru stands out for its size, its commercial activity and its role as a service centre rather than a resort destination; tourism here is limited, with only two guest houses currently operating on the island.
