Lhohi

Lhohi lies in Noonu Atoll, some 185km north of Male', close to Manadhoo, the atoll's capital. The 2022 census recorded 693 residents on the island. Other populated neighbours in the area include Miladhoo and Magoodhoo, while the nearest island of any kind is the small, uninhabited Ganbilivaadhoo.

The island is known chiefly for its surf break, which draws visitors interested in riding waves rather than the more typical beach-and-lagoon holiday found elsewhere in the Maldives. This gives Lhohi a different character to many of its neighbours, whose appeal tends to rest on swimming and diving rather than surfing.

History has left its mark here too: a site on Lhohi known as 'hanguraama fasgandu' is remembered as the location of a clash between Portuguese forces and Maldivians, a rare recorded episode from the island's past.

Getting to Lhohi involves a domestic flight followed by a speedboat transfer, reflecting its distance from Male' and its position within Noonu Atoll.
