Kumundhoo

Kumundhoo is one of the inhabited islands of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, lying in the north of the Maldives within the geographical area known as Thiladhummathi Atoll. It sits some 278 km from Malé, making it one of the more remote communities in the country. According to the 2022 census, 996 people live there, and the island is known primarily as a local community rather than for tourism.

The island holds a notable archaeological feature: a stone circle known locally as Us-Kunna, thought to date from the pre-Islamic Buddhist era and possibly the remains of an old stupa. This gives Kumundhoo a historical dimension not shared by every island in the atoll.

Kumundhoo also has a place in more recent Maldivian history, having been the site of demonstrations in 2006 that formed part of a wider pattern of protest from outer islands against what residents saw as government neglect. Today it can be reached by domestic flight or local ferry.
