Komandoo

Komandoo lies in Shaviyani Atoll, in the northern part of the Maldives, some 215 kilometres from Malé. According to the 2022 census, the island has a resident population of 921 people.

The island's community life has a distinct character, built up through several local associations, including a past students' association, a youth development group and a fishermen's association. Komandoo has also developed its own facilities over time, among them a desalination plant, an FM radio station and a local phone network, which has given it a degree of self-sufficiency not always found on neighbouring islands.

Local tradition traces the island's settlers back to Mathi Komandoo and Keekimini, other sites within Shaviyani Atoll, with old house ruins and wells said to remain as evidence of this earlier occupation.

Getting to Komandoo is possible by domestic flight or by local ferry, and the island is generally known for its everyday community rather than for tourism.
